Samuel Hovda was born and raised in rural Minnesota, where there was an illegal (and now defunct) large-game animal zoo behind his backyard. He also helped make wine in the basement with his dad and once took part in planting an acre of ginseng he never saw grow.
He received his BA in English Literature and Creative Writing from Winona State University in spring 2014, and he now attends the MA program in Creative Writing at the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire, where he also works as a Graduate Assistant Director at the Center for Writing Excellence.
Some of his research interests include modern and contemporary poetry and poetics, phenomenology, and queer and feminist theory. His poems have appeared or are forthcoming in Word Riot, Tinderbox Poetry Journal, Cleaver Magazine, and elsewhere.
